Interview Tips

Here are our 10 tips for interview success.

1. First impressions count

Like it or not many interviewers subconsciously makes decisions about whether they like you or not and whether you will fit into the team within the first 30 seconds.  So ensure you greet your interviewer with a smile and firm handshake.

2. Be prepared

It might sound obvious but you would be surprised at how badly prepared many candidates are. Do you research thoroughly. Look at the company's website. Look at their competitors. Look at their customers. Have your questions and your suggestions ready

3. Be relaxed

Remember that if you have made it through to the interview stage they already like your credentials. Take your time answering questions. Speak slowly. You can help them as much as they can help you.

4. Demonstrate why they should hire you?

The interviewer is looking to find out more about you so be ready to talk about your knowledge, experience, abilities and skills. Have at least three strong points about yourself that you can relate to the company and job on offer. Most job adverts will list qualities they’re looking for - a team worker, a good communicator – so it’s up to you to think of examples of how you can demonstrate these skills.

5. Be positive

Interviewers like to see someone who enjoys a challenge and is enthusiastic so reflect that in your interview. Your interviewer will be thinking about what it would be like to work with you, so the last thing they’ll want to hear is you talking about your boss or current colleagues behind their back.

6. Some quick body language tips

Body language plays a big part in communication so do not fold your arms, do not lean lean back or look to the floor! Sit upright and try to maintain good eye contact. Use your hands and lean forward when making a point.

7. Expect the unexpected

Many employers try to ask at least one 'killer' question in the interview to try and catch you off guard. It is impossible to plan for every difficult question but try to appear relaxed and in control. A great tip to buy more time and collect your thoughts  is to ask the interviewer to repeat the question.

8. Develop rapport

Try and create a two way discussion. Don't wait until the end to ask your questions, Build them into your answers. Ask your interviewer questions about their job, how the company is performing and any challenges the business is facing and then show how you could help

9. Be clear and concise

If you are not certain what is meant by a particular question, ask the interviewer to clarify. At the end, ask the interviewer if there is anything else they need to know about you. Do not be afraid to ask when you are likely to hear if you have been successful or not.

10. Be proactive and courteous

It is better to choose than to be chosen. Tell the interviewer why you are interested in the company and job opportunity. Ask them for a business card and follow it up by sending a "thank-you" e-mail or letter, saying how much you enjoyed meeting them and how interested you are. Take the opportunity to detail the key advantages you bring.
